Hello again! P11

Post by Bernward Dueppmann »

Hello again,

after some years without I just rejoined the ajs & moc again.
Last year I got my 1967 Norton / Matchless P11 back on the road again.
Now I´m in the situation of needing a new rear chain.
The literature that I have about the model is a little bit confusing, because once it says that it has to be a 5/8 in. x .380 in. 100 links chain, the other list says 3/8 in. x .380 in. 100 links chain. What is right?
Where can I get one? What about other replacement chains (5/8 in. x 3/8 in.)?
Do I have to change the sprockets as well like the modern chain sets?
Where can I get the rear sprocket + brake drum?

Many thanks for your replies.

Many thanks for your reply.

I live in Germany near Muenster in Northrine Westfalia. Bought my 1967 P11 in 1995 from a guy in London, had it on the road for a few years.
In the following years I managed to get the correct gas tank, the rear mudguard and numberplate section completed.
Now it looks as it should and its FUN again!

Hello and welcome back.

I knwo nothing about these bikes but there seems to be several possibly useful threads regarding P11 bikes in the competition/racer section of the forum.

Look on page 11 of the 1966-1967-1968 Master Parts List and in the top left hand corner it shows the rear chain for the P11. 5/8 x 3/8 100 links. All P11's had the same lenth of rear chains. All the chain sizes are in the parts book. The single seat high pipe P11 also had its own parts book, in red and white. It was called Replacement Parts, P11 twin cylinder, Scrambles Motorcycle. On page 10 it shows the chain size and links. That size rear chain is readily obtainable. 8-)

Hi John Donne,
thanks a lot for your detailed info.
I´ve found those info in my data as well. But:
The Maintenance and Instruction Manual G85CS, G80CS, P11 Scrambles Motor Cycles says on page 7 (technical data):
rear chain: 3/8 in x .380 in. 100 rollers - So this is a fault in the print?

What about the sprocket and brake drum part-no. 025225 , still availlable somewhere?

Many greetings,
Bernward

The front engine sprocket is the standard Norton Atlas, or 650ss one of 21 teeth, and is available from any Norton dealer. The rear sprocket you can get from the clubs spares scheme new. There are three parts books, and two handbooks for the P11 series. That rear chain size is common to all the later 750 series bikes, except the chain link lengths are different. The P11 series did not have that good a parts book, when you compare them to the parts books supplied by Royal Enfield, BSA, and Triumph. The Norton Matchless division one is not that good, and Royal Enfield were not a big a company as AMC or Norton Matchless was, yet you can see all the very small parts nad their location in their parts books. Do not ask for a parts book with pictures in them as there was never ever one made or published. 8-)
