Secondary Chain Lubrication

Post by Mick D »

Hi

Before I took my G3 off the road in the late 70s I used to lubricate the chain with a product called 'Chainguard', (I think), I'd heat it up over a camping stove in the garage, soak the chain in it, let it 'drip dry' and then it would clart the wheel, tyre with grease thrown off of the chain during the first few miles of use

Things must have moved on by now, so as I prepare to put the bike back on the road what would you recommend I lube my brand new Reynolds chain with before I fit it? - preferably something that will stay on the chain rather than coat everything in the near vicinity :)

Regards Mick

Perhaps it was Linklife. I've still got a tin of that but haven't needed it in recent years.

I have just fitted a new Reynolds chain which looks to be well greased from new, should I have greased it before fitting it?

The manual says oil when dry and every 1,000 miles in wet weather. So we can throw the book away and say, oil when laying up for winter and again when we start the riding season. That may not apply to us all. It will for most of us. Sadly to say, if that's all we do, the chain life will out live us. Primary chains do not do quite so well. Perhaps through neglect. In particular if your last ride of the season was in heavy rain. Water may had got in the chain case. If the chain case is oil tight, the lower chain run will be in water during the winter lay up.
