Small timing pinion
On my bike (G3LS 55) the small timing pinion has no marking..
To remove the nut, I have to turn to the left or the right?

Re: Small timing pinion
To the right (clockwise) as it has a left handed thread.
You do not need to remove it to separate the c/case halves as it will pass through the timing side bush.
It's keyed to the shaft and can be a bit of a b*gger to remove as there's not much of a gap behind it to fit a puller.
(You must remove the oil pump plunger before separating the c/case halves).

Re: Small timing pinion
Neville - I thought it was only on the post '54 engines that the pinion would pass easily through the bush? Earlier bushes and shafts were smaller and the pinion had to be removed first. This is of no consequence here as this engine is '55, but something to bear in mind for anyone with an earlier engine!

Re: Small timing pinion
You could well be right, Bob. My May 1954 single allows the pinion to pass through. A useful point though for others with earlier engines. (Edited as I absent-mindedly wrote incorrectly, 'later engines'. ).zwarts wrote:Neville - I thought it was only on the post '54 engines that the pinion would pass easily through the bush? I also realised later that Ruddy probably wasn't stripping the engine but probably just wanted to remove the nut to see the TDC mark/keyway that the nut was masking. Hope he gets it sorted for the Jampot if he plans to attend - it would be great to meet him and Vincent.

Indeed, I disassemble the nut to find the mark of the TDC .. Find!!
