Ajs 16m, to easy to kick over.

Post by Seldal »

Hello. I have a odd question. My 48 mod. 16m is very easy to kick over. I can kick it over with my hand without using the valvelifter. It starts and run fine, but I really don't know what to exspect from this engine. (My Ajs 500 cs is of course harder to kick over.) I have a amc gearbox on the bike. The tappets is adjusted correct. What can it be?

Worn out barrel/piston, valves needing re grinding, bent valve, it has the earlier flat top piston compared to your 500, it has the compression plate fitted at the bottom of the barrel to cope with the period poor quality petrol. If it runs ok and you are happy with the speed it runs at, use it and enjoy.

Perhaps check your valve clearences, easiest thing to check and if they have tightened then you don't want to leave them and risk burning your valves!

Did you mean to check something other than the tappet clearance?

Though the push rods should be just slack enough to rotate freely in a warm engine, I have found it better to allow just enough play to "feel" lateral movement in the push rod at the top end. I know of several instances where erring too tight rather than too slack has produced the symptoms you describe.

Thanks folks. Yes, the tappets was to tight. I guess I forgot to check them after I adjusted the headbolts. Just hope the valves is OK
