original tool kits

Post by StephenG80 »

Can anyone tell what tools would have been supplied, as standard, with a brand new G80s in 1954 or better still have photos showing make etc. I just thought it would be fun to try and collect a set which would match the originals as closely as possible. Oh and also any photos of an original tool role, colour material etc. . would also be welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Hi

I got information regarding my 61 from the relevant parts list, there is an illustration - boot sales have yielded a few bits and AMC Classic were helpful with repro items and an original grease gun. Can't help with the original tool roll details so will be watching with interest for any advice.

Have a look at page 90 of your bikes instruction book. I think the tool roll was black rexine. Note there's a couple of open ended spanners stamped A.M.C. Not all parts lists show illustrations of the tools.

I believe these are original tools from my father's 1951 single - and now I've got a bike to go with them! :)

I'm fairly certain I've got the pliers and adjustable spanner somewhere too. Is it me or does 017251 or 015023 look like a Mecanno spanner? :o

1953 AJS 16MS, 1939 BSA 250 and a 1/3 scale Sopwith Triplane but that's another story .....

018178 double ended spanner 1.01 by 1.2" & 017252 plug box spanner for 1954. Thats the new pt. no's, may have had old part numbers for your Dads 51 bike. Not Meccano, that's. Lucas points spanner + feeler gauge

I have part of one of those, ie the feeler gauge has gone missing. It doesn't matter to me as I have others.

Yes I saw those and, whilst listed as Matchless, there was nothing to confirm they were not just an assortment of nice old tools.

Anyhow, thanks for all the info and photos folks- any more photos of the actual spanners and pliers would be very useful - then the Ebay search can start in earnest! :-)

You can see from the parts list pics posted, 2 AMC spanners, tyre lever, adjustable, grease gun plus box spanner if it fits the plug, look OK
Hardest to find may be " specials " 017254, 018153 & 018178 + 2 AMC spanners. Others are commonly 10/50p finds at boot sales and jumbles. So for the £35 bundle you should consider as the price is for the 2 AMC harder to find spanners only, you to decide. I would hope to find what I want from that bundle cheaper.
