Rhodesian tyres

Post by Stan Palmer »

I noticed that the tyres I took from my Thunderbird are marked 'Made in Rhodesia', as are the tubes. They are Dunlop K70 in good condition (considering they are at least 38 years old if Dunlop changed their stamping when Rhodesia passed into history). I was wondering if there is any place for them on a Rhodesian restored bike, bearing in mind they are probably only good for display. A long shot that anybody would have any interest, but the reach of this club is wide, also some members are in VMCC as well. Just a cursory check before they find their way to disposal.

Purely out of interest in that your offer wasn't such a long shot; according to Club dating my G3LS was shipped new on May 5th 1954 from Southampton by the Tozer Polad Shipping Line to the Rhodesian Police Force.
But I won't take you up on the tyres, thanks Stan ;)

Hi Sprid, I had a vague idea that there might be classic Rhodesian Police or Army bikes just as there are here. Those boys love originality. Maybe other parts of Africa as possibly the Rhodesian factory served a lot of other countries on the Continent. Just that thing in me that doesn't like throwing away a bit of string until it has been reduced to tooth floss ! I should have added that these are entirely 'no charge' on pick-up in the hope that the advert police don't get me !

a mate of mine had a G80 and G85 that were both ex Rhodesian Police, and the Zim word for motorbike was onomatopoeic in that it sounded like the sound of an old english single.. I forget what it is now..

the swahili word is pikipiki which sounds very 2 stroke :-)

My local tip makes a charge to dump a tyre.
