A quick pick of your clever brains please

Post by Plugsnpoints »

Can anyone please tell me what size and thread tap I need to clean up the threads on the petrol tank fixings for my '58 alternator model M16. It looks like cycle thread?

Thank you :)

Thanks for that. I had an idea it was that, but needed reassurance :)

You'd be better off buying the restorers kit from Tracey Tools, comes in a nice wooden box and is cheaper than buying individual taps and dies. You'll be amazed just how often you have to dig them out when sorting out these pieces of art we call bikes!

I just had a look. They look really good, I may have to splash out and get a set. More expense. Damn you, ajscomboman! ;)

Hi

Could someone post a link to the restorer's kit? I seem to be having a 'blonde' moment in my search

Cheers Mick

I will have to have a look at this. I've just ordered a single tap for now. A link would be useful thanks for this advice :)

Yep that's the one but go for the HSS version, better quality and value. Was in a bit of a rush, sorry about the smelling pistake.

Hi

It's a nice set and a good saving but I'd advise prospective purchasers to do their research.

More often than not a second tap will be all that is needed, (mainly for clearing paint / powder coat). One thread restoration file will recover most male threads encountered. You'll need a tap wrench if you don't already have one and that's about it.

Carbon steel is more than high enough quality for restoration in my opinion and experience.

So: 5x Second Taps, Tap Wrench, Thread Restoration File - Change out of £35 ;)
