If I haven't manufacturer's data I've worked on the basis of 1.5 thou clearance per inch of bore diameter which has been O.K. so your 4.5 thou should be fine for your 500.
I know little about WD colours except from what I've absorbed on here but it seems that even when new from the factory, with paint in short supply, colours varied quite a bit. I think those destined say for Arica were sand coloured rather than the more iconic drab olive or khaki or whatever it was called. Many were repainted 'in the field workshops' with whatever paint or mix was to hand I believe. If your friend has a contract number plate on the bike it will help define the destination or branch of the military for which it was originally intended.
