Magneto or Coil ignition

Post by mikeydpippin »

Maybe I,m going mad in my old age but... I prefer magneto/ dynamo to coil ignition no spark magneto is faulty, in my mind the magneto came first but I believe it's a better system.
In fact I,m thinking of replacing my ignition 59 Matchless g3 for a 1957 Magneto model G3.
Would appreciate your thoughts, maybe it's the alternator and rotor setting and all the brainstorming bits that go with the ignition model.
Plus flat battery with the ignition model and you ain't going anywhere...

Trouble is with a diesel bike Rex you may get somewhere, but so slowly you will be bored to death. Mike I agree on the magneto/dynamo combination. Many a time i have got home with a flat battery, however others would argue the battery would not have gone flat with a properly set up alternator. On two of my bikes I have gone for the very expensive Alton alternator option.

Mag every time for me. AMC only fitted coil ignition to cut costs.

If mags are good enough for a Merlin engine then they're good enough for me - although they do have two in a Spitfire.
A mag will always get you home, unlike a flat battery.

This thread reminds me of reading my dad's car magazines when I was a boy.

I remember people being horrified when car makers began to do away with starting handles! How would they cope with setting the tappets, timing the ignition or heaven forbid having to start the car with a flat battery!

Mind you last year I bought an OBD2 computer to plug into my car. I was unsure at first but it paid for itself with the first repair I did.

I still think it's outrageous not being able to buy a shot of two stroke at the pumps these days!

Just for the record my single late '57 Ajay has a coil fitted and it's been fine once I replaced the advance/retard unit as it was a tad worn after 60 odd years. The twin has a good old K2F.

I have a mag on my 18s ( converted from coil some years ago), in fact all my bikes are mag. wouldn't entertain coil for the reasons given above. However, the battery on my 18s is completly dead now and although the alternator is fine whilst riding, on aproaching bends and applying the rear brake ( robs the headlight ) and can suddenly leave you in the dark just at the wrong moment. Things may improve when I fit an led stop/tail bulb.

I recently replaced all the lamps (bulbs) with LEDs apart from the speedo one as I couldn't find one yet.

The difference is pretty impressive I have to say, even though it's still running 6v positive earth on the 350.

The lights are white, it shows a positive charge even with the headlight on, with none of the delay when you switch on with the original yellow ones. It looks very similar to having a halogen lamp.

Because there's a lot less drain on the battery/ignition it starts easier and runs a lot better.

Presumably as there's less draw on the battery the spark isn't compromised.

Have to agree there. Sure I got all leds for the G3 inc speedo one from Dynamoregconversions.
