Unusual tools

Post by MalcW »

I was doing some work on a 500 twin yesterday evening. Among the usual tools you would expect, I also employed an axe and a walking boot. No, I wasn't resorting to violence. The rubber coated axe handle made a good tool for gently levering the gearbox backwards, and the boot proved useful for standing a rechargeable LED inspection lamp in to illuminate the primary drive.

Anyone else found unexpected items useful?

I used a plastic downspout clip for a piston ring compressor on a twin. Trouble was when the barrell was on I couldn't get the plastic clip out because of the barrell studs. I heated one end with the hot air gun and quickly pulled it out with pliers. I've used it again several times.

I have used to use a radio for setting points. Tune the radio away from a station and when the points open it makes a resounding click!

Spriddler, that milk bottle idea would be brilliant for filling primary chaincases.

Spookefoote, I've got an old transistor radio in the garage that would be great for that. I bought it when I was 11 - I paid it off at 4 bob a week.

Yes, it's not easy to control the normal oil container and a small funnel.

A couple of chums find plastic milk bottles a great convenience when camping.............
