Thanks for all of the tips and advice guys. Rob, I never did (ahem) get to expose my balls but the half a turn lock nut slackening, working the bars to spread the fresh grease, and then readjusting has definitely done the trick. Put the bike on the centre stand at the weekend and the bars swung straight onto the steering head stops under their own weight. Luckily the wasp nest was simply in the dome nut and inside the bearing tube and has been bottle-brushed out. Next nest is on the top of the rocker box and tank underside!
