All to do with ‘retail price maintenance', to ensure that when you wanted to buy a replacement you went to the dealer, I.e. AMC, BSA, Norton etc.
Basically most speedometers fit more than one model.
The L etc refers to case colour.

The mph speedo for my 61 G12csr is SC 3312/00 and the kilometre speedo is SC 3312/01.
Looking at the Smiths' catalogue the last digit goes up one for the kmh speedo. But I was only checking the speedos I have and didn't look at them all.
