It's a matter of logistics - getting the bike to one and paying fix and paying for a repair would cost more than a kit to do it myself. It's not a job beyond my skills so I may bits the bullet and bug one of hold my breath and go metric on that bolt!

I have never seen 3BA helicoils for sale only 2BA, but you could tap the 3BA holes out to 2BA or even M5 and use screws to suit, you would of course have to open the holes in the plate to suit.

Colin is M5 doable?I have m5 taps or would 2BA be better?

Hi Angelo,

It can be done a few ways, 1. 3BA is same dia size as M4, I have M4 helicoil kit you can borrow, 2. tap out to 2BA as the existing hole will be hole will be around the right size, 3. If you decide to go to M5 you may need to drill out to 4.3 to suit the M5 tap.

PM sent.

Well that seemed quick and easy on my thread ! So the blanking plate has 4 cap head screws 1 thread was no good some time ago so in desperation I tapped a BSW 1/8 into it and popped an BSW 1/8 cap head into it - all good albeit not the correct size as the others but I needed the bike and it was what I had. I noticed a small weep from around one of the other cap heads so nipped it up but felt it starting to let go so stopped. Today I took that cap head out and as a test drilled and tapped a BA3 into a scrap bit of alloy block - put the screw in and it was tight in the thread so i drilled and tapped a 4mm into the same scale and lo and behold the screw went in fine! So looks like previous owner has substituted 4mm instead of 3BA. I had ordered the correct 3BA screws so tried one - went in perfect and tightened great! So swapped 3 all good - will have to live with the one I tapped to 1/8 BSW but will get a new screw and take the head down to visually match. Job done and no drama. If it stops weeping great if not I have a new gasket to fit.
