Lights or no lights to ride on the road??
I'm just sorting out my recently fully restored 1961 18cs for road use.
My question is do I need to have front and or rear lights by law to use in the road. Also do I need a rear brake light ? I've heard conflicting answers from no lights at all to just a brake light. It won't be used at night but obviously I don't want to get picked up by pc plod either.
Cheers Steve.

Red rear reflector only, same as a bicycle.

The MOT man told me years ago that I needed a brake light on my 1957 G80S. Cheers. Bruce.Bobsteve wrote:I'm just sorting out my recently fully restored 1961 18cs for road use.

A stop light is not required for a daylight MOT (Not that you need one)

I don't know if its true that you don't need a stop light . but I think I'd prefer the lunatic behind me to see one .

I agree and I was surprised to find that it is not required.bob wrote:I don't know if its true that you don't need a stop light . but I think I'd prefer the lunatic behind me to see one .

As Alan said above reflector only, that's the law.

If there are no lights fitted to your bike at all there should be no problem, if fitted with lights however they must work.

this is right, if fitted they should work and conform to MOT standards, brake lights have been mandatory since the late 1930s i believe! as rear reflector, the one in the rear lens of the rear light may not conform to the standards of a true reflector,

Re: Lights or no lights to ride on the road??
I have for some time tried to get a definitive answer re stop lamps and the MOT, despite reading as much as I can on the subject there does not seem to be anywhere which actually gives an answer, one regulation states a stop lamp should be fitted for use on a road and if fitted then lights should be working to pass a test, quite confusing really, so my advice is to fit the stop lamp only then tape it for the MOT, if required, collect certificate and remove tape. There was also some confusion regarding a bulb type horn but this has been given to a specific date. kind regards
