It depends on the make of kickstart. I think the original was 3/8" BSF. It needs to be high tensile or it will always be coming loose.

I have sorted it now, it is 3/8" BSF, what was throwing me was on some AMC gearbox spares sites it was coming out as UNF threaded bolt.
The gearlever is 1/4" through bolt, not threaded within the lever.
