It does sound reasonable, but people on line were warning of problems breaking the joint to get the case off. Hence greasing one side so it doesn't stick hard. I don't know, never used heavy silicone for a joint before. I've tried the instant gasket, gold ones and grey ones, but as you say they squash so thin I am not convinced. I bought the Three Bond on the recommendation of a cub specialist. Apparently they leak from every joint if you don't use it. So rather disappointed that it failed on the first hurdle. Might have been better with the joint assembled and not tightened for a few days. Plus a hairdryer to help curing.

Re: Day 7 in the Big Brother house...
It's all a bit "surreal"... I go for a cycle ride most days for my permitted exercise. I usually cover around 30 miles on the country lanes between the A17 and the Wash in south Lincolnshire and I rarely see another soul; the lanes are deserted apart from an occasional tractor. I can stand on the sea bank, the highest point for miles, and I see no one. I'm far more isolated there than I am in my front room.
However, if take one of my motorbikes out and ride the same route, it's not an essential journey and I'm being socially irresponsible... and quite possibly would be fined if stopped by the police. We live in interesting times....

I'm from the Fens.... Gimme six.

Hi
I've never subscribed to the 'grease one side' method, as far as I'm concerned both sides need to be scrupulously clean and free from burrs or high spots, apply sealant to both faces, allow to partially cure and then assemble. If I'm using a gasket I apply sealant to all four faces.
In this case I would try a thick gasket paper and Welseal, (I'm not a fan of silicone and it's propensity to block oil ways).
Why not clean the faces and nip the cases together then explore the joint with the finest feeler gauge you have? would give you an idea of where to concentrate your efforts.
Regards Mick

Hi Stan, three bond is good and can accommodate some surface irregularities but if the joint faces are that far out no gasket will work reliably, its time to dismantle and get the piece of plate glass out.Stan Palmer wrote:I bought the Three Bond on the recommendation of a cub specialist. Good idea to check with feeler gauges. I have to clean everything anyway, so I'll do that and then take a view on it.

I have some material called Klingerette, it's a kind of thin cork. Klingers used to make gaskets and my, now dead, mother-in-law used to work there. I wonder if it would help. Send me the dimensions and address in a PM and I'll cut you off a piece and you could try it.
