Knee grips

Post by electrajohnt »

I am trying to put the old knee grips onto the repainted tank. The tank is the one with the chrome panels. Is it because I am inept, is it because the grips are old or is there a wrinkle to doing this. Advise please if you would, please do not take the easy option.

Hi

If it is the tank with the removable chrome side panels, have you got the correct spacers between the tank and knee grip plates?

I used tyre soap to lubricate the grips and started by getting the bottom located, then the wide end, the pointed end and finally the curved top. Bend the rubber away from the tank just inside the edge of the plate and the flange will slip under the plate.

Last bit can be tricky. Try soaking the hard old rubber in warm soapy water. Do as above. When you get to the last bit at the top, bend the top edge down with your thumbs. You will see this will raise the inner flange up to slip over the plate.
