Its the same principle as double d'clutching ie. matching engine speed with road speed.

Armed with the advice, went out for a test drive and can report gear changes now smooth (not a mechanical problem, just a rider technique problem). Many thanks for the advice.

Can also report that front brake has improved significantly after doing the trailing edge mod covered in earlier articles.
