tumble vibrators

I have a multitude of nuts, pins, and small items that need cleaning before taking for zinc plating, normally I spend ages at a bench grinder fitted with a wire brush, but, I have been looking on the internet at the diy tumble vibrating devices that use media to clean things. Has anyone made one, did it work, how long does it take, what did you use to make it (already drawn a blank with the items from the missus kitchen answer was - NO) etc.
Advice please.

Along similar lines, I am weighing up a small DIY blast cabinet over a commercial one. I think a cabinet would be of more use to me over a shaker.
