Swinging arm bushes

Post by Flash »

Has anyone fitted new bearings in the swinging arm units of a matchless G9 and what sort of job is it ? I noticed that there is play in mine so I guess it's time to bite the bullet and get them done, I have never done this job before so a few helpful hints on the best way to do it, pitfalls etc, would be very handy, before I tackle this task.

If the play is side play that only takes a minute to take up.

Couple of techy articles here:

Reminder.....the cotter pins are scalloped, you can loosen them but cannot remove them completely until the shaft is out. ;)

Hi

It's all pretty straightforward unless you need to line ream the bushes, (not difficult but not the sort of tooling most folk have lying around).

Remove / install the bushes with the aid of studding nuts washers and tubes, (sockets).

That's how I did it. Take note of the Spriddler's comment, the pins will not come out until the shaft is out. For your own piece if mind put a note on to remind you to replace the "cotter" - they're not - pins BEFORE replacing the shaft.

Mick D's approach is how I did the job, many years ago. Those lengths of threaded studding are really useful.

On a 53 g 9 it's a push fit shaft with a short spoke , two end caps, one with oil level hole and a nipple to finish.

The studding for the bushes, removal and replacement, not the shaft.

I had to use a length of studding to remove the pivot tube. It was rusted in very solidly. However, the bushes were ok and a new pivot tube was all that was needed.
