Plus one for Sievert gas torch. Excellent quality.

Ref the G/box stand.
Why not just mount the box in the bench vice, clamped onto the lower through stud mount? This has always worked for me.

I use a chain wrench which serves the same purpose on or off of the bike. Torqueing on the bike is essential for Ariels with enclosed chain guards where the sprocket must be fitted after the guard.

Yes, Mick, the stand would be fixed down to the bench. That feature was added as an "after-thought", but may be useful if I'm ever working on a gearbox with the sprocket attached. Normally, I would remove the sprocket whilst the gearbox was still on the bike. Having said that, the last time I had cause to remove a sprocket on a Burman gearbox (on my recently acquired G80CS), the nut was only finger tight. The locking washer "teeth" that engaged with the output gear sleeve had all but disappeared. I suspect that a previous owner hadn't tightened the nut sufficiently, allowing it to work loose.

I only have a small vice (apart from beer), and it doesn't open that far... anyway, where's the fun in that? I enjoy making things, and it gave me something to do for a couple of days to relieve the boredom of a Covid lockdown.

Hi John

I have that tee shirt too - having put off the removal of my first GB box until the correct box spanner arrived, armed with my new box spanner I knocked back the tab and unscrewed the nut by hand :roll:

Funny that. I stripped down a box a couple of days ago that appeared to have never been apart. And the sprocket nut was a sod to get off. Not mullered but just bloody tight. I have a big socket of the correct size and even then had to give it a good warm up with the torch. The good news is that apart from a couple of bushes, gaskets and oil seals the box is in very fine condition and can go straight back together.

For the price of a few pints of beer, I'd put new ball races in on both ends of the mainshaft as a matter of course.
