1938 AJS Silver Streak Clutch.

Post by ianw1 »

I've just built the clutch & when kicking over the clutch is slipping. No matter how much tension on the springs it slips on compression.
I have 3 steel plates & 3 friction plates, plus 1 thick steel plate. According to the Parts list I should have 4 steel plates & 4 friction plates plus 1 thick plate. Help please.

I think you have already answered your question. You need another friction plate and a steel plate? Not sure what help you are after.

New plates arrived & are fitted, but only 3 friction plates & 4 steel plates fitted! My hub will not accept 4 friction plates & 5 steel plates.
I've no reason to question that the hub centre or clutch drum have been changed from when the bike left the factory.
For those in the know, did the Burman 1-HP gearbox have different hubs fitted that would take 3 friction plates & hubs that would take 4 friction plates?
Great plates, no more clutch slip.

The 1938 AJS 1-HP box used on 250 & 350 was introduced mid year. Updates for parts lists were usually loose leaf, so get lost. In 1939 the 1- HP box was only used on the 250. So if you refer to the 1939 parts list you will see you should have one thick steel plate, three thin steel pates and three friction plates
