CSR speed kit

Post by Lars E »

Does anyone have documentation on the so called speed kit that could be bought for the ´63 G12CSR.
Cam- and ignition timing and carburettor set up. Was there ever anything written about this in the motorcyclepress in the sixties?

CSR speed kit

Hi Lars,
You could have some items listed on BMS Spares List 1963/64, (Arthur/993 p.27) as optional equipment (twin carbs, rev-counter conv etc).
Camshafts are avalaible from the Spares Scheme as 025084R & 025085R. You can read data in F. NEILL "Service and overhaul manual for AJS and MATCHLESS TWIN : p; 77 fitting twin carbs. p. 84 timing diagram for "R" cam. French revue "MOTO REVUE" tested a G12 CSR in 1962 : with stock camshafts the top speed was 190,3 Kph, on MONTLHERY RING.

Testing at Montlhery must have been under VERY favourable conditions, and/or the bike was prepared by the race shop. Perhaps AMC brought over one of the Thruxton bikes??

A normal CSR will run shy of 170 km/h; a bike equipped with the Speed kit will just about hit the 180 km/h mark.
There is always a variance in engine data - the quoted output figure is usually the lowest guaranteed output. A good single carb CSR may have had a top speed of 175 km/h. However, 190.3 km/h was hardly the result of mean value of 3 bi-directional speed tests, perhaps best single direction speed.

This test was carried out in March 1962. As this is a ring, the data are reliable, in any case more than measurements taken in a straight line, even in both directions. Three French pilots carried out the tests. J. Insermini : 189,148 KPH (117,439 MPH), J.P. Beltoise :190.325 (118.06 MPH), A. NEBOUT : 189.15 KPH (117.439 MPH). On the very difficult 9.81 km Montlhéry road circuit, Beltoise achieved 128.3 KPH (79.53 MPH). The record holder at the time on this circuit was the late Ken Kavanagh @ 134 kph on a MANX! And Beltoise could have done better if the machine hadn't had serious handling problems in big curves, and the same brakes as a G3L! 1962 was the first year for 750 cc sports racing in France. Beltoise won it in 62 & 63. In 1964 it was a 750 Atlas, in 1965 an R69S ...I will scan the article published in Moto Revue on April 7, 1962, so that it appears in the archives, thanks to Rob Harknett. And you can read the test of the production G12CSR in JAMPOT # 588 of July 2001...
