Model 31 mag timing gear

Post by teebee67 »

I am fitting electronic ignition to my Model 31 which means removing the mag timing gear. I have bought a puller from the club spares scheme but it just will not screw into the mag timing gear. Neither the threads on the gear or the puller appear damaged. I was wondering did AMC use more than one thread on these items, anyone know please?

No there's only one type. It's probabely plating in the threads, unless it's just badly made. I'd contact the spares scheme, they may have had a bad batch, but will be able to advise you. No-one in your section got one?

Cheers Dave.

Thanks for the reply Dave. I haven't yet joined a section as I am having a few small problems with the bike and I want to be able to ride it to club nights. I will contact the spares department today.

Tony, that's a good reason to make contact with your section.

You wouldn't be the first to turn up on club nights by car with a box of oily bits :)

From memory, which I admit isn't always that good, I think the thread in the mag gear wheel is the same as a Norton Roadholder fork top nut. I know that doesn't necessarily help but if you have one kicking about you could knock up an extractor with that.

Managed to drill and tap the drive gear and use a PVL ignition rotor puller that I had lying around from my Honda K4 days. On with fitting the electronic ignition now.

Thanks for the replies.

Glad you're sorted. Which electronic ignition have you gone for?

Ended up going for the Wassell with the billet ally replacement for the magneto. I know it doesn't look original but I figure I can recoup most of my outlay by selling the mag.

Yep, stick it on eBay.
