Bike identification

Post by Eamonn »

Can anyone assist in identifying the model and year please?

My best guess is a 1953 Model 20, but I note it has the torpedo lights on the front headlamp (1954) and a narrow width front hub.

Also not sure about the high capacity oil pump casing.... possible added afterwards?

I'm going for 1951. CP gearbox, plate tank badges make it '51. The side lights are not Lucas torpedo. All AJS twins had those bulges over the oilpumps, so not high capacity.

Jampots and 4 bolt fixings to the rocker covers are also a good clue to being 51

It has a Durban, South Africa registration number.
Not sure what the pendant on the front is for.
There is a 1951 licence disc on lh fork and 3rd party insurance disc for 51/52 on rh fork.

Tut tut, Nev you should know Ray's is a 52 model! Gearbox gives it away and the bottom sliders aren't painted, Tank badges are 52.

That fits the story - the picture has been supplied by the grandson of the rider and his family is based in South Africa.
