end float

Post by offshorezen »

I've just put the crankcase of my G80 together and machined some spacing washers to set the end float of the crank to twenty thousands on an inch (0.020") which according to the technical specifications I have is the correct tolerance.
It seems too large to me. When I shake the engine the crank slides from side to side with a clunk each way. It seems too sloppy. Is 0.020" the correct tolerance????

Frightening for the engineers amongst us I know but I have put together and used at least 10 single engines and never bothered about end float. So long as the there is clearance for it to rotate (within reason) then when the shock absorber spring is bolted up the whole plot is pulled over to that side anyway. Of course if it is the later model with the AMC gearbox and no shock absorber this is irrelevant!

Thanks Clive,
Your comment is relevant. It has a Burman gearbox. The 0.020" end float is specified without the shock absorber spring fitted.
As sloppy as it seems I guess I'll just proceed and hope it's ok.
