Was wondering about the finish of the back coating , should it be matt, semi gloss or full gloss ?

I have had a look at photographs online and see all 3 options .

Gloss black powder coat. Almost indestructible, appearance doesn't change if oily, and easy to clean.

your local motorbike shop will sell an aerosol can of hi temp black paint developed for cylinders. Its easy to apply bakes on hard, have a selection between gloss and matt. Just degrease the barrel/shot blast it and spray. Job done.
Paint cost about £10 last time i bought some, enough for 2 barrels.

I have been put off powder coating of barrels because it might reduce the cooling effect of the fins(so im told) and i dont like powder coating anyway. And its another process you cant do at home.

I always spray them with Hammerite Smooth. Seems to stand the heat ok and always looks good. Also you can use the can to spray other small parts so its cost effective.

Hi

For best heat dissipation matt black, (looks the best too in my opinion).

Gloss powder coat is the worst of your proposals for heat dissipation and if it chips or peels it's not fixable at home and in situ.

Thankyou for all the advice, it helped me realise that for me heat transfer is paramount. The bike will be used in a hot country and it's already had a piston seizure. I am now on the hunt for a satin black spray on paint that can withstand high temperatures and has good thermal conductivity/radiation and can be applied in a thin layer.
