I am going to buy an 1936 AJS, in fact a basketcase. I havn't seen the hole maschine yet, but I think im going to pay the offer. The frame nr. is 2826, and the engine nr. 2244.
The bike was sold new in Norway, where I live.
Can anyone out there tell me some more about the bike. I think there was another number on the engine, 36/8 or 36/18.

AJS 1936
Erik
You don't say what capacity this bike is. The AJS range had about 14 models in 1936 including 250's sidevalves and vee twins.
The model number should be stamped on the crankcase along with year; 36/8 for twinport 500 ohv, 36/18 for single port, 36/16 for one of the 350's etc.
If it is the ohv 500 model 8 or 18 it will have vertical engine of 84 x 90mm, rear mounted mag-dyno, Burman gearbox and frame with triple stays to the rear wheel. This year is the last of the old style AJS based on the original AJS company's design of 1931; it also has total loss oiling!
The other models in the AJS range for 1936 follow the Matchless pattern with similarities to our familiar postwar models.
BM-S can provide a photocopy catalogue. Contact me directly if you want further information.
I would like to have a model 18 myself.
