Rear hub width for 1949 model 18

Post by Invicta »

The saga of my rear wheel re build on the 1949 model 18 basket case continues. I want to order new rims and the supplier asked, "Is my cotton reel hub 3.1" or 4"? . Well it is neither It measures 2.580" between the flanges and 4.380" over the widest point of the hub. It measures 3.275" across the outside of the flat part where the sprocket ,6 hole, bolts on. . I see from the parts book that a different part number is used for a 1948 wheel "012226" and 1949 "014916" Is this because the 1949 hub is a different size. I also have a 1950 model 18 and the hub on that is about 0.050" wider than the 1949 hub. I know that the rear of the frame for 1950 was made slightly wider, but then the 1948 and 1949 rear frames also have different part numbers. My question is, have I got the correct rear wheel hub for my 1949 frame? I do not want to get it powder coated and fit the new bearings etc. only to find it is not the correct one for the frame.

If you check 'Devon rims' web site they indicate the measurement should be taken at the outside of the flange at its widest point. Have a look. They are not cheap, but at least you start off with a round rim

Hi Allan,
I have done that and it measures 3.275" nothing like 4". I spoke to a very helpful gentleman at Devon Rim co and he said to just measure the length of the old spokes, which I did and he told me that I have the 4" cotton reel, though I am still none the wiser as to where thy measure the 4" from. He was not either. I still don't know if the hb I have is correct for 1949.

Hi

If the chap from DRC needed to know the spoke length the hub dimension may be related to the pitch circle diameter of the spoke holes, (the imaginary circle the centres of the spoke holes describe), does this correspond?

Hi Mick

That makes sense. The circle of the spoke holes diameter is in fact 4" However looking on Devon Rim co e bay site they list the 3.1" hub as being the one for a G80 or model 18 amongst dozens of other Matchless models with 19" rims Apparently the holes in the rim are pierced and dimpled the same irrespective of which hub you have , the only difference is in the spoke length. So will order the rims and spokes the same length as the old ones and hopefully all will be well.

Thank you.

Dave..
