Carburettor advice for AJS 18s 1953

Post by oldmodern »

Am hoping someone could advise me on the best Carb for my bike.
Originally fitted with a 89b/1ak which regrettably had a cracked body and leaked petrol.
I was Advised to fit a more reliable monobloc, which I ordered through our spares scheme.
The carb I have is a 389/18 which has the tickler on the wrong side. I could live with this but I'd rather not.
Could anyone recommend a carb with a r.h.s. tickler?
Regards Ron

As far as I'm aware the tickler on a monbloc is always on the left side ( when seated), never seen it on the right.

There's right hand bowl Monobloc made for twins - presumably with a r/h tickler. Maybe there's a r/h one that will suit an 18S.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but does not the Type 89 carb also have the float chamber and therefore tickler, on the LHS just behind the horn?
The monobloc fitted to '55 on 500 singles certainly should have the tickler on the left and it should also have a 1 5/32" choke size.

Glad the answer wasn't too "clear cut", means the question wasn't stupid!. Am happy to live with l/h/s tickler, just a little awkward with gloved sausage fingers.
My original 89 setup has a separate float bowl fed into the bottom of the carb. so can be spun either side.
Thanks for all your kind responses.

Hi

Is it possible to configure the float chamber on the right, albeit obstructing the throttle stop and air screw?

Wonder why the OP wants the tickler on the right.

A monobloc with a right hand tickler is a 689 which are not manufactured anymore. I agree it is fiddly using a 389 on a single but the reliability over a pre-monobloc is worth the awkwardness.

The bike and biking is new to me. The bike came with a r/h tickler.
With the inlet port r/h justified I assumed this would be natural. I am however happy with l/h. Just didn't expect it.
Already have the carb so on it goes, then onto the next problem!
