The engine looks like an early twin '50 or '51 with 4 bolt rocker covers and pressure relief valve on inlet cam end. The gearbox and clutch are BSA A10 etc.
Dave.

Re: engine ID
Hi
The gearbox is BSA A10 I think - Ariel made a model designated MB in the thirties.
Regards Mick

Re: engine ID
@clive, it's interesting to me that you indicate that there was a frame with a hole like that. Looking closely at the pictures, the "hard tail" rear of the frame seems completely bolted on. Another aspect of this is that the frame seems made to bolt up to that engine and use it as a structural unit. Granted, this could be customized that way, keeping in mind the low quality of the pictures, it doesn't seem like this was custom. Is there any way you could show me a pic of that frame you're talking about? Thanks.

I do now have an engine number: 51\G9.6214. Looking into decyphering what that means, but my guess would be 1951 and model G9 - is that right?

Re: engine ID
So, interesting. I found this ebay auction for a 1951 G9 frame. Not my frame but there are definitely similarities:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/1951-Matchless ... Swn2leWTPW
The shape of the neck is almost an exact match. and that frame hole... - so weird.
This rear frame section for the G9 seems like a bolt on, like mine is, though mine seems custom made:

Yup. 51 model anyway, as in after the annual m/cycle show of 1950.garycolwill wrote:I do now have an engine number: 51\G9.6214. Looking into decyphering what that means, but my guess would be 1951 and model G9 - is that right?

Re: engine ID
look closer at the hole, the one you have bought has little around it the AMC frame is heavily surrounded.garycolwill wrote:So, interesting. I found this ebay auction for a 1951 G9 frame. Not my frame but there are definitely similarities:

Re: engine ID
That's true. I'm not saying this is an AMC frame, but I do find it curious how much there is in common with a 1951 G9 frame. Lots of differences, as well, but I have never seen that hole in the downtube on any motorcycle I've come in contact with before. Strange.

1952 or 1953 Triumph Thunderbird 6T: http://automotoclassicsale.com/node/37064 - take a look at photo #10. The guys over at the britbikes.com forum figured it out.
