1950 slider removal (non-damper rod design)

Post by ajs1950ca »

Can anyone tell me how to get the sliders off the inner tubes on these forks? They do not have damper rods as used in later model forks. Is it necessary to remove the bolt from the bottom of the slider first and then employ the same method as is used for later model forks (i.e. heat the slider around the area of the seal and then give the slider a good hard pull down?

Ken,
Its been a while since I looked in there, but I'm sure you don't need to undo the bottom bolt - which only retains the little damper valve.

What is required is to unscrew the chrome cover that screws in to the top of the alloy slider, on a very fine thread. This retains the oil seal, and is the only thing holding the whole show together. Removing the cover without damaging it is an art, and they can be very tight.

If you already have this off, then yes, all it needs is a good heave apart.

hopethishelps,
Rohan.
