Recently acquired AJS motor bike

Post by Mark O'Shaughnessy. »

Dear jampot members I have just acquired the above mentioned bike, I need a little help in trying to identify it?
The bike was acquired around 1970 by an uncle who stripped it down to restore it, unfortunatley he then died and the bike has been sitting in various plastic bags ever since. I have just rescued it from going into a skip in the nick of time. The bike is complete with just the exhaust and handle bars being beyond rescue. The rest of the bike is in remarkably good conditions!
I think the bike may well be a 1940's AJS 350cc
The rear has no suspension, with a King and Queen seat.
The number on the engine is 46/16m 3355
There is also a number on the barrel-W4Q3LE1

Does the 46/16m refer to 1946?
Has anybody got any information which could help?

Cheers MOS

Mark,
Welcome to the world of AJS ownership !! The numbers confirm its a 1946 AJS Model 16, a 350cc single. Rigid frame, telescopic front forks, single seat. These are a quite sound bike, and the Club spares scheme and various suppliers should have all the bits you need to get it back on the road. There are several quite active chat lists on Yahoo groups for Ajays and Matchies ...

hopethishelps,
Rohan.
