1959 James Captain 200cc

Post by Matt Pelly. »

I have just acquired one of the above and am brand new to the world of classic bikes.

Where's the best place for information/support?

Also, what's the best LRP/Oil mix for a 2-stroke...!?

Matt,
Welcome to the world of classic machines and all the joy and problems they bring!

Unfortunately since this is the AJS and Matchless Owners club, I am going to terminate this forum entry since I want to keep the discussion topics to "pure" AJS and Matchless discussions (note to the AMOC techies - yes I know that James came into the AMC fold !)

However before I do, I hope you find the following useful:

Contact for the British Two Stroke Owners Club:
Alan Abrahams, 3B Charles Drive, Cuxton, Kent MEZ 1 DR.

Websites for James:
http://freespace.virgin.net/mw.berrie/

Also try:
http://www.francis-barnett.freeserve.co.uk/
(since James and FB were often rebadged versions of the same thing)

For the petroil mix, start with 20:1 ratio and maybe go to 25:1 if its too smokey. But remember they're not like the carefully controlled oil supplies in Jap 2-strokes so they will smoke more and this is quite normal. Also I wouldn't bother with using LRP, unleaded should do fine (and its cheaper!). The lead in petrol helps to lubricate valves and things in a 4-stroke engine, but as you don't have these complications in a 2-stroke and there is a supply of oil splashing around in the mixture, I don't think its necessary to use LRP.

I hope that helps you on your way - any other questions you may have, email me direct and I will try to help.
