Hi,

Does anyone know where my wife's father's 1952 AJS is now?

KWP397.

At least it still exists with original plate. You can write to and pay the DVLA for the address details if you have a good honest reason to find out.

Thanks Les for your reply. I have downloaded the form and sent it off.

My wife's father, Terry James, had this bike for 25 years until he died in 1979. He took it on many journeys including to the Arctic Circle and the piece he wrote from that tour won him the IMTC Jock West Trophy for 1956.

It would be fantastic if it is still out there somewhere.

It is on SORN, so is still out there somewhere. It also would had been taxed when SORN was introduced.

Following the above advice I wrote to DVLA using their form and sending the fee. I also included some old photos of the bike.

They have now written back a personal and sympathetic letter saying that whilst they understood the reason for the request, it is not a public register and this is not sufficient reason for them to let me have the name and address of the current owner. They sent back my cheque.

So, any other ideas for tracing the bike anyone?

Thanks for your help.

The DVLA is a publicly funded service organisation.
Isn't it about time they were challenged under the Freedom of Information Act?
Not to give you the information (Data Protection blah,blah,blah....) but to be required forward your request for information to the current owner.

This might be worth a try
Write a letter with your contact details and what you have .
Put in an unaddressed envelope , leave unsealed , put stamp on envelope .
Put this envelope into a envelope addressed to DVLA with request to post on to current registered owner .
This worked for me some years ago .
