Threat of high tariffs on US imported bikes over

EU-USA Steel Dispute - Threat of high tariffs on US imported bikes is over

The campaign undertaken by European motorcyclists in parallel with the motorcycle industry's lead to a successful outcome with the European Commission removing motorcycles from the retaliation list on products imported from the US.

These retaliation measures have been set up by the European Union in reaction to high tariffs that would be imposed on US imports of European Steel. The products in proposed retaliation list included motorcycles, Tropicana orange juice, textiles, steel products, amongst others.

FEMA immediately undertook a campaign in parallel with the motorcycle industry's. A letter campaign supported by FEMA members was organised, and meetings took place with the relevant EU officials urging them to keep motorcycles out of this trade dispute over steel. The inclusion of motorcycles in this retaliation list is inappropriate, and it is unfair to penalise motorcycle users by increasing the prices of the US imported bikes they would want to buy.

Antonio Perlot, FEMA Secretary General elect said: "These arguments have been heard and accepted by the European Union. FEMA wishes to thank the Commission and Parliament for listening and understanding the point of view of motorcyclists as consumers".

A similar case took place a few years ago with the USA including small and medium size machines imported from the EU in their retaliation list in response to the EU ban on imports of US hormone-treated beef. The American riders' organisations and motorcycle industry also succeeded in having bikes removed from the list.
