gearbox light weight and engine oil flow

Post by paraman »

hi to everybody out there.
paraman here, i am rebuilding a g2 250 and i know this will be a daft question to the old and bold, but have the bike put together and then thought i would put oil in the thing.
looked at the red book and it does not say where to put the 3 pints of oil into the g/box?
I am thinking it should be put in where the small inspection cover is (clutch cable end)?
have come to a stop as i dont want to end up messing the g/box up as i have just had it repaired.
The engine oil flow i know can be looked at by removing the oil filler cap, how quick should the flow be?
Should it be a steady flow or splutter?
Well i have been rebuilding this for sometime now round about 30 years i do not want to get it wrong now, i thank you all who will read this and look forward to your reply.

3pints of oil via the cover on the side of the gearbox, which also gives access to the clutch cable. 2 1/2 pints in the engine.
When filling the gearbox fill slowly to allow time for oil to seep through.
On starting the engine, allow time for oil to circulate before judging flow. It may just spurt bubbles when oil first starts to appear.Edited by - Rob Harknett on 29 Jul 2012 7:50:52 PM

You put the oil in that small inspection cap as you
say. I check the level prior to every run. Oil is
cheaper than a new Gearbox. The Engine oil flow
is a splutter.

You are right, you fill the g/box through the inspection plate hole, keep it full and you will have no problems. The oil return just below the filler cap will only bubble on tick-over, the more revs you give it the faster it will return.
I've just noticed Rob has beaten me to the answer .

David,
Perhaps we will meet you and the G2 at the Kelso Rally in four weeks' time?
Come and show it off after all your hard work on it.
Best regards.
