Help my buy my first spare part.
I've assembled my 1964 g2 that I bought in bits, and now taken it apart again and gained a list of jobs and problems. First one is a missing stud, the one that goes through the bottom of the gearbox straps.
5/16", about 5" long
After a bit of a trawl through the forum I expect it to be a cycle thread, but I'm guessing.
The part number in my exploded diagram is too fuzzy to read, could be 1014103
So what are my options? Can I just go out and buy one or shall I cheat and just use a bolt?
PLease help me get started.
Cheers,
IAn.

What you do is up to you, its your bike.........options are
1. B and Q buy a length of M8 studding and couple of nuts, M8 is same dia as 5/16.
2. Buy 5/16 x 26 split die, buy some 5/16 dia steel online or steel stockist and make proper one.
3. Chuck any old bolt in there

or why not:
4. Order the proper one from the owners club or other supplier.
Steve at 'AMC Classics' has been particular helpful to me lately in supplying some replacement engine studs where the parts list's description was somewhat confusing (e.g. bottom rear vs. rear bottom studs etc).
Best to use the correct thread rather than M8 to save them getting mixed up in the future.

Funny about the M8 stud as it happens, it looks like the job was done previously by an 8mm bolt, with no nut on the end! When I finally got behind the primary case instead of the loose nut and washer that I expected I found a nice new copper washer that I transferred to the primary case drain and the washer from the gearbox pinch bolt.
I'm not outraged, I've run bikes on a tight budget before and done all sorts of lash-ups to get to work on it on Monday, I'm going to use a proper stud with a cycle thread, the mix of threads and fasteners on my g2 is astonishing plus lots are worn and some are damaged and I thought I'd be able to figure out what goes where but I'm struggling so I'll be putting proper ones where they should be, just for the sake of whoever comes after me.
