Amal carb...???

Post by cartergsd »

Just going through the box of bits of my 62 m14 sapphire and noticed that the carb does not have amal written on it, its just plain with nothing written on it.

Should it be amal? could this still be an amal?

Perhaps the float chamber cover that says Amal is not fitted, ( no pics ) has it any numbers on it?
Soon tell if they are Amal numbers.

It should be OK, may need setting up so the bikes runs OK , correct would not be correct unless you have a supply of 1962 fuel.

376/99 is the correct carb but take it apart and check...

Main jet 180
Throttle slide 3 and 1/2
Needle jet 106
Central needle position
Pilot jet 25
I think the needle should be a standard "D" but can't find that in my book for some reason

Make sure you gasket it all up properly, get a new o ring for the recess in the flange where it bolts to the head. Don't put any fibre washer under the float needle housing (the one where the fuel goes in) otherwise you will screw up the fuel level and give yourself all sorts of problems and DON'T tighten up the flange nuts too tight as this can warp the flange and give you an air leak which will make it run like a pig. Do it properly first time, as I found out to my frustration and make sure ALL the holes even the tiny ones are clear and everything is clean and clear including the pilot jet. If you have to remove the main slide jet block you MUST fit a new gasket and tighten it down fully as this can cause problems as well. I have had my fair share of carb problems on my Model 8 so come back if you can't get it right and I may be able to help
