re_ profiling Cam followers

Post by ade »

Hi
I cannot seem to source any new or second hand Cam followers for my M14. A engineering friend told me to use fine files and wet and dry to smooth it out. I would like everyone's thoughts on this and has anyone done it?

Oh er missus, they have the classic worn out look! For mild wear, you can fine file and wet flat them, but the hard surface is not much more than a couple of thou thick and once through they will just clap out in no time.
They can be resurfaced and re ground, not cheap, but if no other option is availiable!!!

Are the cams ok?

Another thought is to bring back to shape and then have them case hardened. I do not know which steel they are made of, but some types of steel can be heat treated to regain hardness.
Do remember any material removed will effect the push rod length and subsequent rocker adjustment !

Others may have some thoughts, especially as to type of steel?

Ade, I assume you are the same person as one with the same name and home town who appears in the membership list but at present your log-in does not show you as a member. This means there will be parts of the website you cannot access. I was going to suggest you advertised for the cam followers but as a non member was going to tell you about the cost. As a member it it free to advertise in the wanted section of the mag, and also in the wanted ads on the forum ( although you won't see this until you change your log-in.) give Eamonn an email at webmaster@jampot.com to get it sorted. I am not sure with the current log-in that you will get the PM referred to above.

When I wrote that comment you were showing up as a guest member, now you are showing as a full member. Perhaps it's something to do with me being in Australia at present and so 9 hours ahead of myself!

Plenty of car camshaft reprofilers around would any of them do the job?
If nothing local ask around some of the local engineering places especially the older ones who still do things by hand.
Sadly these places are getting fewer usually tucked up a backstreet somewhere.

Ask these Mini specialists as they may know someone local.
