Clutch plates

Post by oldgit61 »

The clutch plates that were in the bike when I bought it are rather rusty, so I thought that I'd replace them.
But when I looked at the exploded enging drawing I noticed that the steel plates have the outer tags and the friction plates have the inner tags, but mine are the other way round.
Friction have 8 outer tags, and the steel plates have 8 inside tags.
Any thoughts anyone?

Amc clutches come in both types depending on the year. If it works ok then just buy to suit either from the club . Amc classic spares or elsewhere .

Clutch plates for lightweights are available from club spares so I would buy them if you're going to be spending money anyway. If nothing else, it will help a future owner to know what he needs as a replacement instead of having the same query you have.

Trouble is the club spares only lists the steel plates with outside tags, and I need them with inside tags. Having already bought a complete clutch for a "amc light weight machine", only to find it was way too big ( now sitting in a box in my garage), I'm being extra careful what I buy now.

I'm no expert but as far as I know, all the lightweights had outside ears on the steel plates and inside tags on the friction plates. The heavyweights had different plates of course.

It is hideously complex! They managed to come up with almost every variation of clutch plate arrangements. The parts manual workshop manuals are confusing at best.

Here are the four that I know of:

Mine is different to all them, my friction plates have 8 outside tags and the steel plates 8 inside tags. Beginning to wonder if they are from a different make bike. Also my clutch has 5 springs, pictures I come across only seem to show 3.

Ah, it's definitely not a Lightweight clutch then. All the Lightweight ones have 3 springs.
Can you post a photo? I wonder if someone's managed to fit a clutch off a Japanese bike...
