Have used auto trans in forks with no ill effects. and strangely enough the gearbox in my beat up old white van uses auto trans in a manual box, as specified .
Mind you on occasions the `manual` bit refers to two `manuals` especially reverse.
No need for a reverse warning signal then...

I have oil in my chaincase to the level plug and the clutch is fine, so this question is hypothetical. As the rear chain goes on for mile after mile in the mucky/gritty outside environment, what is wrong (and I am sure someone will tell me), with coating the drive chain with chain lube and with the occasional refresh spray to keep it oily?

The clutch rollers also need a little lubrication on occasion.
Cheers, Don.

Point taken, but how do you deal with that when converting to belt drive - not that I intend to do that - just interested.

The belt drive arrangement would use a sealed bearing. The primary chain moves a lot faster than the secondary. If you have one, the shock absorber and the mainshaft/sprocket bearing area needs oil.

Thanks for that Biscuit - next time I remove the chaincase cover I will make myself more familiar with the setup.

Interesting point. Run a belt primary drive and a dry clutch, you need a sealed outer crankshaft drive side bearing so no oil gets around the belt. You run a dry clutch. So how do the clutch centre rollers get lubricated ?

Read my lips Jim - the clutch is fitted with a SEALED BEARING.

Sorry, thought you were referring to the outer crank main bearing.

Now sorted. I fitted a single sided friction plate on the outside of the clutch assembly. Although still one clutch plate short for the CSR it gives enough friction for the clutch to bite properly and as the spring pressures can now be relieved I have a lighter clutch lever action.

We're cooking now.....

Cheers
