Handbook,".... Gearbox inspection plate secured by two screws on the gear box end cover.
Gear box lubrication SAE 50. On no account must grease be used.
The normal oil level is 3 pints. ( 1 . 8 litres. )
After draining and replenishing the oil at the first 500 miles....top up every..... to a level just below the bottom of the orifice for the inspection plate. "
It does appear vital to maintain the oil capacity. Failure to do so can wreck the gearbox.

Hi Chris,
Does it matter if there goes too much oil in?
I was only wondering as I`m not that far ...yet.
If I was to put the `bike on the side stand and dribbled maybe another 1/4 pint in would it damage anything or blow seals. The manual says that it`s imperative to keep the oil topped up as the gears are at the top of the box(even though it`s round!?!) so I thought that maybe a little more oil would help!
It was only a thought.
Cheers, basketcase.

Nigel
I have found that the cover to the gearbox to which the oil should be filled too is not that oil tight, I have used a thin rubber joint.
It would be a good mod to have a glass inspection plete somewhere there to see if the oil is going down.

Plastic window!!!Ohhh thats a good idea.
Tilt the bike and see an oil level !!!
I dont know how you could overfill seeing as though you fill through the open plate.
Talking of light weight oil level and being low can wreck a gearbox, does'nt splash accomodate for partial lubrication. Im talking partial lubrication and not starvation.
