I`ve solved the problem concerning the head bearings.....the cups were in the wrong way round. They wouldn`t fit, until a tad was ground off where it touched the down tube. I know it sounds a bit `Heath Robinson` but it works!!
Problem 2 arose when fitting everything back together, upon tightening the nuts holding the caps on the bottom of the forks, CRACK!!. I now have a lovely split in the r/h leg up to the drain plug. Will I be able to alloy weld it or am I best sourcing a replacement?
Who mentioned `long term project`?!?
Basketcase.

Re G2 CSR head bearings
I've had welding done on these, but not in that location, for me it was a split in the mudguard lug , opposite side to the brake anchor, and it's worked fine. But I have to say that Flavell's, the local firm that did it, had a top class reputation and long experience of alloy welding.
Where yours is sounds like a different kettle of fish altogether. It would make me nervous.
Good Luck
