Dave, although it doesn't answer your question, in regard to the dating certificate I think the gearbox number is irrelevant.

ONLY GOING ON THIS: Documentation Regarding Age-Related Registrations
Issue of Dating Certificates to assist in the issue of an age-related number.
A clear, close-up photo of frame and engine number stampings must always be provided, plus a note of the gearbox number. The Machine Dating Officer will then issue a Dating Certificate to support applications for DVLC age related registrations - a separate letter is also supplied, quoting detail from the factory dispatch records.
The fee for this service is £8.50 to Club Members and £12.50 to non-members.

As far as I can remember the number is stamped on the outer casing of the box but you need to remove the engine/gearbox outer cover for access. If that's not the case post again and I'll take a good look.

Dave - I went down the same route recently and although it may be of historic interest to know if the gearbox is "original" the DVLA is primarily interested in the frame number and date. The club dating certificate I got did not even mention the gearbox but was included in the associated paperwork.

So great if you can find the number but it won't effect you getting your number if for some reason it is "missing".

Have removed the engine/gearbox outer cover. But still no sign of gear box number.
