Sprocket bolts for G2CSR

Post by Janet »

I need some new nuts and bolts for my back sprocket ( the one that bolts on the wheel ) becasue I lost most of them on the Westward Ho run. Thanks to Dick Somers I was able to ride home with only a couple missing. Thanks to Graham Flint I was able to ride home at all. Thanks to Luky who found one I'd dropped in Lynmouth car park.I really want to fit a full set of new ones but JSL doesn't sell them and I don't know what they are.

Before I get the "surely you know what your bike is" comment, I know what the original part number is, but unlike some part lists, mine just refers to what it is and not the specification. I know very little about bolts but I am aware there are different types with different threads. It would be useful if someone could tell me what they should be so I can make enquiries . Otherwise I will have to take one round to various suppliers in an attempt to match them up.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

They are most likely 5/16" Cycle thread which you should be able to buy from Ebay . I dont expect local fastener suppliers will be able to help, they dont usually stock Cycle thread -not even cycle shops will.

Using an existing bolt as a pattern measure the diameter and shank (length of bolt minus the head) and beg or borrow a thread gauge to check that it is BSCY (cycle thread) at 26 t.p.i. (threads per inch). You can then order a nice smart set of new chromed bolts, nuts and washers from the Custom Fasteners website.

Thank you for the suggestion but I think it would be easier and quicker for me to take a bolt round to various specialist suppliers and ask if they sell any the same than it would be to find a thread gauge. Maybe Gluyn will be going to Stafford Show and can look out for some for me.

I was hoping to get some that fitted with the patina of the bike and not any of those nasty shiny chromy things.

Janet, Problem is that no local stockists will have cycle thread (I think even bicycles don't use it now except standardised components like the crank), so you have to use the specialist people like our suppliers or those on the web. But you don't need a thread gauge. Hold a steel rule against the thread, count how many thread crests are on a measured section. It is simple maths to convert to TPI, for instance if the total length first crest to last is 1/2 inch, and there are 13 crests, then it is 26TPI.
