Endfloat model 14

I've recently bought an AJS 14 CSR (1966)(I'm new to AMC having moved up (?) from Bantams) the gearbox mainshaft bearing is shot and with the clutch out I notice there is a whole lot of crankshaft endfloat ... is this normal? If not does it mean replacing the main bearings? I cannot feel any up and down movement.
Thanks

No it's not normal. As far as I can remember the end float is controlled by the timing side bush, I would recommend checking the up and down play in that side as it can cause problems with the oil pump worm drive.
Other's more experienced than myself may be able to add to this.

Thanks for that, I feared as much and I'll check the timing side.
