fork stanchions

Post by StuBaker »

Have just managed (at last) to separate the stanchions and sliders on my model 14 CSR lightweight (by using the length of pipe and fork puller combination). I now find that both stanchions are slightly bent ... can anyone recommend a company to straighten them?
Thanks

take them along to any engineering company in your area and seek their advice but I would be inclined to buy a new pair, about £100 for peace of mind. Its obvious the bikes had a shunt so dont take any chances,it could cost you a lot more than the price of a pair of new stantchions

Most Fork tubes bend slightly in prolonged use. Its a simple case of easing with a flypress, vee blocks and a dial gauge. if you dont have a friendly local engineering company, it probably cheaper to buy a new pair

I agree, very simple (and reliable) fix to straighten.
If they are bent so far that the metal kinks or ripples when they are straightened, then they are finished..

Yes. If they look bent with the naked eye, just throw them away

Many thanks, they are only slightly bent but I don't have a friendly engineering company! So may well go for new (where does it all end?!)

do you not have metal work classes in your school or a college nearby?

straightening stanchions is quite OK, used to do my own.

you can get a half decent hydraulic press off ebay for around 100 ish

A sledge hammer works for me, protecting the stanchion of course! (ducking for cover)!
