I've had a cable break at the lever end (not on My G2 ) and discovered that the nipple was not turning freely in the lever so the cable was bending backwards and forwards until it snapped. now, checking cables for free movement is another one of my regular maintenance checks.

Why make the cables with a pear shaped nipple that has to then fit in a barrel, to fit the lever???

I believe it's so that the small nipple will pass through holes in brackets etc which are not large enough to allow a 'full-sized' nipple through.
