E is the emergency start postion when the battery is flat, never worked for me in the 60s and doesn't work for me now

Never worked for me either. Now that is, I was too young to have owned a bike in the 60's!

Back "in the day!" I had a pal with a coil ignition (BSA 250sv, I think) bike, when the battery was flat--often--- he would select the "E" position and we 'd give him a long hard push start, or run him down a decent hill, and it would start, but never on the kickstart!

Nope, it means if your battery is dead it will run straight off the alternator. Works a treat on mine :¬)
Best not to run it like it for too long though as effectively chucks too much current through.

It works on mine, too. I believe the instructions are not to run it for more than a few minutes on this setting but it is good to charge up a battery enough for normal starting afterwards.

Works well on all my Lightweights too, and has saved my bacon on a couple of occasions - like last winter (snow, etc, AJS Model 8 used throughout all that, chugged up hill and back again day after day) when I left the lights on at work...

It's one reason I keep the splendid 6V electrics!

Works on mine too.
The those that want to be sneaky, fit a kill button, push on push off type, fitted in the headlamp shell at the bottom.

Might be because my twin is converted to 12v? When i'm working on it in that area next i'll check out the connections etc but so far a dead battery has meant a jump start or recharge for me, no difference using the emergency setting.
It's all just riding motorbikes
